How to make an insurance claim: a step-by-step guide

Whether you are claiming on life, income protection or health cover, the process follows a similar shape. Being organised makes a real difference.

1. Notify your insurer early

Contact your insurer as soon as possible after the event. Early notification helps them guide you and prevents unnecessary delays.

2. Gather your documents

You will usually need the policy details, identification, and supporting evidence such as medical reports or receipts. Download the correct claim form for your insurer and policy type.

3. Complete the claim form carefully

Fill in every section and answer questions accurately. Missing information is one of the most common causes of delay.

4. Submit and follow up

Send your claim through the insurer's preferred channel and keep copies of everything. Ask for a claim reference and a realistic timeframe.

If your claim is declined, you have the right to ask for the reasons in writing and to lodge a complaint or seek external review.
