Choosing the right private health cover

Private health insurance in Australia comes in two main parts: hospital cover and extras (ancillary) cover. Many members combine both.

Hospital cover tiers

Hospital cover is grouped into Basic, Bronze, Silver and Gold tiers, each covering a defined set of clinical categories. Higher tiers cover more procedures.

Extras cover

Extras cover helps with services like dental, optical and physiotherapy, usually up to annual limits. Choose extras that match the services you actually use.

Waiting periods and the rebate

New cover has waiting periods before you can claim, and the Australian Government private health insurance rebate may reduce your premium depending on income.
